Sage Assemblies are unique. Over the years, participants have experienced rapid-fire project descriptions, ranging from open genomic data sharing to novel education methods to in-depth keynotes on how data drives tornado models and micro lending. But you can also expect to be turned out into the host city and asked to interact directly with other attendees, local citizens, nature, data, and your own personal aspirations. Each year has brought something a little different.
There are opportunities for informal engagement through our receptions and break times, and you can expect to be called to the podium to speak. We provide attendees the opportunity to step forward and tell their stories through the context of each year’s Assembly theme. The agenda is curated around a careful narrative arc aimed to create both short-term and long-term change for participants.
Assemblies over the years:
- 2018 Assembly: Algorithms and the Role of the Individual was held in Seattle on April 19 – 21. Together we explored the expanding impact of algorithms – positive and negative, on our personalized healthcare and life decisions.
- 2017 Seattle Assembly: Mapping Open Ecosystems focused on themes directly relevant to the Sage Bionetworks mission to accelerate health research through open systems, incentives and standards.
- 2016 Shenzhen Assembly: Open Innovation and the Environment held with co-host Tsinghua University focused on the ubiquity of and the knowledge to be gained from personal sensors, and how this form of open learning can be applied to address issues of real concern.
- 2015 Paris Assembly: Connecting Open Research, Open Education and Open Social Impact examined how three trends – large-scale data, social networks, and novel institutional power structures – relate to open research, open education, and open social impact. Co-hosted by the Institut Pasteur and the Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire.
- Recordings including keynotes from Jessica Jackley, William Drayton, Jaykumar Menon
- Building on Sage Bionetworks’ core theme of innovation in open science, the Commons Congress was held annually in San Francisco from 2010-2013. Keynote speakers included Wadah Khanfar, Jennifer Pahlka, Lawrence Lessig, Adrien Treuille and many others.
